Perhaps this is the reason for the otherwise inexplicable Afghanistan surge: Bin Laden was sighted in the country in early 2009. Obama's defining moment in office is yet to come-- what a surprise it would be if he captured the elusive terrorist leader. That would go a long way toward redeeming him in many peoples' eyes and might even be likely given increased surveillance technology and troop escalations in the region.
On Friday, the first major offensive operation under President Barack Obama was launched as US and British soldiers moved into the Now Zad valley of Helmand province in Afghanistan. Roughly 1000 Marines and an unreleased number of British troops are invoilved in the operation designed to limit Taliban freedom of movement in the area.

In an operation called Cobra's Anger, British and US troops are assaulting an area of southern Afghanistan. Taliban forces use the area for smuggling operations and the coalition's new strategy is to disrupt their control of the region. Control of the border with Pakistan is another goal.

In Kabul, numerous people can be seen wearing masks out of fear of the pandemic disease and it has affected many US troops serving in the region. Because of poor medical conditions we can expect the fatality rate to be far higher in developing countries.
